Every month, the Rondo Theatre Company hosts a free-to-attend play reading social. These are usually off beat, modern plays that invite laughter and discussion, especially regarding some of the bizarre stage directions! Drinks flow, snacks are shared and the community spirit of the group is strengthened. This June, they are pleased to be hosting ‘Callisto: A Queer Epic’ in collaboration with the Queer Bath programme.
From a secret wedding in 1680, to explorations of grief and liberty in the 20th century and a search for bliss in 2223, ‘Callisto: A Queer Epic’’s poignant stories take inspiration from real life events as well as a look into what the future might hold. Whether you’re bold and unapologetic like Arabella, shy and sweet like Alan or wide eyed in wonder like CAL - these transtemporal tales of human connection are sure to make you smile.
First staged in 2016 with a cast that featured Emma D’Arcy, the show was developed by Arcola Theatre for an off West End run shortly after. The play has since been staged by University and community groups nationwide.
All are welcome at Rondo Theatre Company play readings where attendees are invited to read aloud the play in full (script in hand), having turns with each character and breaking for tea, chats and snacks.
These events are very relaxed and there's no pressure to read if you don't want to but everyone will get the chance to regardless of age/ gender/ etc.
